If you’re interested in knowing more about me as an author, I think there is no better place to start than my inspirations. These are people that have shaped my thinking on both fiction and life in general.

Fantasy authors

Most of the authors in this list will have influenced me either directly or indirectly. It is a small community but with a wide breadth of ideas and imagination.

C. S. Lewis

My biggest inspiration is C. S. Lewis, an intellectual giant of the 20th century whose written works range from children’s books to non-fiction covering subjects such as religion and philosophy. I am most inspired by his non-fiction but also love his Narnia series.

Brandon Sanderson

Not only is Brandon Sanderson one of my favourite authors (I particularly love his Mistborn series) but he teaches writing and has a writing podcast available on his site.

J. R. R. Tolkien

No fantasy authors list is complete without Lord of the Rings and its author, J. R. R. Tolkien. I read the books as a kid and was impressed. I have to admit the books are a little drawn out for my liking but I love the movies.

George R. R. Martin

Thanks to the wildly popular series Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin is a household name  in fantasy. I don’t think it’s possible to read or watch the series and not be moved with the depth and breadth of characters.

J.K.Rowling

Need I say more? Harry Potter is one of the greatest works of literature in my opinion. This author does what a good series of books does and tells a gripping and compelling story that you can’t put down.

These are just a few of the great fantasy authors that have influenced me and my writing. The great thing about fantasy is the escapism it gives and these are among the best at creating vivid worlds that we can lose ourselves into.
